Senior Design Engineer – Marketing
Company: Buffer
Team: Marketing
Work Environment: Small, agile and highly collaborative team
Job Summary
Buffer is seeking a talented Senior Design Engineer to join its Marketing team. In this role, you will be the engineer most closely responsible for how Buffer’s web presence looks, feels, and behaves.
You will take ownership of the frontend design system, build high-performing reusable components, and create polished interactions and animations that bring Buffer’s marketing pages to life. You will work across brand, product marketing, and growth initiatives while independently managing your projects and time.
This opportunity is ideal for an experienced frontend engineer who combines strong technical expertise with excellent visual judgement, attention to detail, and a passion for creating engaging digital experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and continuously improve Buffer’s frontend design system.
- Develop responsive, accessible, and high-performing marketing pages.
- Build reusable components using React, TypeScript, and modern frontend technologies.
- Translate visual concepts and brand requirements into polished web experiences.
- Create thoughtful interactions and animations using Motion, CSS animations, or similar techniques.
- Collaborate across brand, product marketing, design, and growth projects.
- Improve and extend existing component libraries and frontend systems.
- Maintain consistency in visual design and user experience across Buffer’s web presence.
- Optimise web pages for performance, accessibility, responsiveness, and maintainability.
- Take ownership of frontend implementation from initial concept through delivery.
- Manage projects and priorities independently within a small, agile team.
- Contribute ideas and technical recommendations that improve the quality of Buffer’s digital experiences.
Requirements
- Strong professional experience in frontend engineering.
- Advanced knowledge of React and TypeScript.
- Excellent understanding of responsive web development and modern CSS.
- Strong visual judgement and close attention to interaction quality and design details.
- Hands-on experience building frontend animations using Motion, CSS animations, or other creative approaches.
- Experience working with design systems and reusable component libraries.
- Ability to improve and evolve established systems, not only build new products from scratch.
- Strong understanding of frontend performance, accessibility, and maintainable architecture.
- Ability to manage time, priorities, and technical responsibilities independently.
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Added Advantages
- Experience working with Next.js.
- Familiarity with the Next.js App Router.
- Understanding of Server-Side Rendering and Incremental Static Regeneration.
- Experience working with Edge Functions.
- Previous involvement in brand, product marketing, or growth-focused projects.
- Open-source contributions or independently owned frontend projects.
Portfolio Expectations
Applicants should provide examples that demonstrate their frontend and design-engineering abilities. These may include:
- A professional portfolio or personal website.
- Open-source contributions.
- Animation and interaction projects.
- Design systems or reusable component libraries.
- Marketing websites or visually detailed frontend projects.
- Projects in which they personally owned the implementation.
The strongest examples will demonstrate excellent frontend craftsmanship, thoughtful interaction design, visual attention to detail, and clear technical ownership.
